Instead of soil, we grow directly in water! To help the roots find their way, we use a cultivation pod made of sterile coconut fiber and peat, which is optimized to keep the roots in place and deliver nutrients effectively. The plants thrive in this clean environment because it promotes the growth of beneficial bacteria and ensures good air circulation. This way, the roots stay perfectly moist and easily find the water.
We are proud of our water in Tibro! For the third time, it has been awarded in the "Sweden's Best Tap Water" competition. This competition is organized every five years by the industry association "Svenskt Vatten," where a jury of renowned sommeliers evaluates all the entries. We optimize the water (oxygen, pH, EC, etc.) for our various crops and then let it circulate. This allows us to use up to 99% less water than traditional farming.
Plants need energy to perform photosynthesis. We use state-of-the-art, energy-efficient LED technology that adjusts the light spectrum and intensity to create the perfect lighting conditions for each plant. We are proud to be climate certified and optimize our energy use, which comes from 100% renewable energy sources.
Our water system monitors the mix of minerals, enzymes, and other nutrients, adjusting them according to the plant's age and needs. This approach allows us to grow really delicious fruits and vegetables that are healthy and thriving.
Plants are sensitive and need the right temperature and humidity to thrive. It simply has to be just right. In our indoor farm, we control the temperature and humidity, so we are not affected by a hot summer or a cold winter.
There are many things a farmer needs to protect their crops from: aphids, caterpillars, fungi, and a range of other threats. Additionally, in many cases, the crops need to endure long transportation from warmer climates. Many farmers are burdened by this and are forced to use pesticides or genetically modified plants (GMOs) to make their cultivation profitable. Since Supernormal Greens grows indoors, in a protected environment, we do not need to use pesticides.
In 2018, the EU changed its regulations on what qualifies as organic. The new rules state that only cultivation on traditional farmland can be considered organic. The Nordic countries opposed this decision, as it also affects our existing greenhouses, but the regulation still came into effect. Supernormal Greens uses hydroponic farming, which means growing plants directly in water. The plants are secured in place by a cultivation pod made from sterile coconut fiber and peat, ensuring the roots easily reach the water. Because Supernormal Greens’ crops are not grown in soil, they do not meet the EU’s definition of organic. However, Supernormal Greens meets and often exceeds the minimum requirements for organic farming in almost all other aspects of certification. What matters most to us is the actual impact we make—we grow locally, without pesticides, and with minimal environmental impact.
The bag is ISCC certified and made from renewable materials (95% based on mass balance) from biocircular sources, such as used cooking oil or pine oil (unlike other plastics made from fossil raw materials). It is recyclable as a plastic package.
